Austria Secured A 3 1 Victory Over Poland In Their Second Group D Match At Euro 2024 On Thursday Thanks To Two Late Goals

Poland vs Austria: Late goals secure Euro 2024 win for Austria

Austria secured a 3-1 victory over Poland in their second Group D match at Euro 2024 on Thursday, thanks to two late goals.

Substitute Marko Arnautovic scored the winner in the 85th minute, after Xaver Schlager had equalized for Austria in the 65th minute. Robert Lewandowski had given Poland the lead in the 27th minute.

The result leaves Austria in second place in Group D, with three points from two matches. Poland are bottom of the group, with one point from two matches.

Austria started the match brightly and had the better of the early chances. However, it was Poland who took the lead against the run of play, when Lewandowski fired home a low shot from just inside the penalty area.

Austria continued to press for an equalizer, and they were finally rewarded in the 65th minute when Schlager headed home from a corner. Just when it seemed that the match was heading for a draw, Arnautovic popped up to score the winner with a powerful header.

The victory is a major boost for Austria's hopes of reaching the last 16. Poland, on the other hand, must now beat France in their final group match to have any chance of progressing.

In a post-match interview, Austria coach Ralf Rangnick said: "I am very happy with the performance of my team today. We played with great character and determination, and we deserved to win. We now have a great chance of reaching the last 16, and we will give it our all in our final group match against France."

Poland coach Czesław Michniewicz said: "We are very disappointed with the result today. We started the match well, but we conceded two soft goals. We need to improve our defending if we want to reach the last 16."
